Arty Crafty Sessions

Create with card

Create and construct your own greeting cards to add that extra special meaning to your message to someone. Learn how everyday, often throw-away items can be re-used to create something beautiful. You can add cloth, glitter and all forms of collage to Nature’s shapes to construct something original and beautiful. Your guide will take on a short wander to open your eyes to the fantastic colours, shapes and textures of The Hills Forest. Then create a few different cards, with or without help to complete mementos of your discovery day. All materials supplied.

Forest Fairies and Gumnut Gnomes

Do ‘flower fairies’ and ‘gumnut gnomes’ live deep in The Hills Forest? Join in a discovery walk and hear the tale of the long lost Fairy Forest Map that, when found, will lead you to the fairies and gnomes secret places! Come on boys and girls! Dress up as a fairy or a gnome and explore the nooks and crannies of the beautiful fairy forest. Make rainbow bubbles and join in the fairy craft making session.

Snugglegum and Cuddlenut

Go on a special Snugglegum bushwalk, hunt for forest colours and create your very own forest fantasia collage. Catch glimpses of the tiny world of cuddlenuts and learn how everything in this world lives in harmony. Then make your own harmonies, and sing along with the gumblossum choir. You’ll hear some forest fairy stories, while you make your own gumnut babies to take home.

Bush Paper

Make your own recycled paper incorporating natural bush products. Join our expert papermaker for this hands-on activity that’s fun for the whole family. All materials are supplied. Or book in for our Bush Bookbinder Special where you get to bind recycled paper books, note pads, and secret diaries in attractive wildflower covers.

Bush Sculpture and Jewellery

Take a short walk in the forest to look at how Mother Nature designs fantstic shapes and colours our world. Choose from heaps of different materials such as feathers, gumnuts, grass seeds to make a giant bush creature which we’ll leave as a gift to the forest. Then make your own awesome and original badges, brooches and pendants using clay and found objects.

Crafty Creatures

Prepare to get down and get dirty as you go on safari to discover life forms of the weirdest shapes and habits. See if you can find a spider’s comb, a beetle’s ears or an ant lion’s cave. Then sculpt your own clay forest fantasy-animal to take home with you as your memento of the forest.

Forest Forms in Terracotta

Tune into the forest and its many beautiful shapes and textures on an easy bush walk. Make a simple sketch (we teach you how) and return to the wide shady verandahs of The Hills Forest Discovery Centre to create your own terracotta tile featuring forest shapes. Let the creativity flow and learn a new skill, chat with friends and just take it easy. You’ll make two tiles and a terracotta sculpture which will dress up that magic part of your garden and start you off on the road to terrific terracotta fun. We’ll supply morning tea served with good quality coffee and teas. BYO lunch.

Face of the Forest

Make terracotta masks for your wall or that special spot in your garden. Before you start, enjoy a stroll through the forest overlooking the Mundaring Weir. You’ll tune your senses in to the different shapes and images that make up the bush. Let your imagination flow as your guide highlights the aesthetics of nature, which is all food for your creative self. Return to the Centre to carve and sculpt a mask representing the ‘face’ of one of the seasons or elements of the forest. Create your own terracotta mask or use ideas from the extensive range of pictures available.

First Steps in Charcoal

Join a beginners charcoal drawing session. Start with a walk in the forest to tune in to the different lines and textures in nature. Take your first  steps in sketching in this easy medium - charcoal. You’ll be guided through some basics to help release the artist inside of you.

Sun-catchers

Lead-lighting without the use of lead! Draw and develop your own bush animal, pictures of wildlife, wildflowers, reptiles or bird life whilst enjoying the fresh forest surroundings. Join in the fun, be creative and make your own bright and colourful sun-catcher to put up on your bedroom window.

Hooked on Hessian

Create some woolly pictures of bush animals and plants using a no-fail method of sewing onto hessian stretched over large wooden frames. There are no sharp needles used in this easy art activity and you end up with a great wall hanging or table centrepiece.
