Bush Walking on the Bibbulum Track
The cooler months of the year are a great
time to get out and explore the bush. Here in Western Australia we have an
incredible resource that is truly world class – The Bibbulmun Track. Over
the past few years a lot of work has been done to realign the track to
take in more beautiful scenery and to provide excellent facilities.
“The Bibbulmun Track is now
one of the world's great long distance walk trails, stretching 963.1kms
from Kalamunda to Albany through the heart of the scenic South West of
Western Australia.
Along the way 48 state-of-the-art campsites provide facilities unmatched
in the southern hemisphere. Great maps and guides detail sections suitable
for walkers of all levels of experience."

The Friends of the
Bibbulmun Track
organise regular events. Many of them cater for young families and include
sections of the track which can be navigated by robust
pushchairs. Below is
an account of this year’s Children’s Bush Theatre:

In March our family attended a magical evening organised by
the Friends of the Bibbulmun Track. We met our group just off the Brookton
highway at 4.30pm and then took part in a gentle 2.5 km walk along the track
to one of the shelters. Our guide Steve did a great job of explaining how
the track works and sharing stories of previous walks. It was a beautiful
time of day to be out walking and was just the right distance for little
legs. We reached the shelter at dusk and were greeted by a friendly team who
had set up and prepared for the evening. We all shared our simple dinners
(what we could carry) checked out the excellent facilities provided at the
shelter, including a composting toilet, and then settled in for the show by
“Indigo Sand”. What a treat! The children (and adults) were all held
spellbound as the performers wove story after story using puppetry, song and
mime against the setting of the evening bush. The last story told a tale
about a woman who found pancakes hanging from the trees. Afterwards we all
regrouped and walked back to our cars along the track by torchlight
following the reflective “waugal” markers. This was a great adventure for
many in the group especially when we found some pancakes hanging from the
trees along the way!
It was an enchanting night all round. We met some great
people and our children (aged 5 and7) managed the whole walk easily. We
would like to thank Steve,
the Friends of the Bibbulmun Track,
and CALM
for
the great work they are doing in creating a very special place.
The Friends of the Bibbulmun Track is an incorporated
not-for-profit community based organisation established to provide support
for the management, maintenance and marketing of the 'new' Bibbulmun Track.
Whilst CALM will continue to act as the manager of the Track,
the Friends will ensure that the Track "remains a long distance walk trail
of international significance and quality."
