Ginger Bread Men
“Run, run, as fast as
you can
You can’t catch me
I’m the Ginger Bread Man”
Here is a great cooking
activity to tie in with some story-telling.
You Need:
125 grams (4 oz) butter
1 egg yolk
½ cup sugar
2 ½ cups plain flour
1 teaspoon bicarbonate soda
3 teaspoons ground ginger
3 tablespoons of golden syrup or honey
sultanas or currants
coloured sweets and icing/jam (optional)
Cream the butter and
sugar. Add egg-yolk and beat well. Gradually add sifted dry ingredients
and warmed syrup/honey. Mix well and knead lightly on a floured board. If
the dough is too crumbly add a few drops of water.
Use a rolling pin to roll the dough flat until it is about 5mm
flat. Cut out ginger bread men using a specially shaped cookie cutter.
Alternatively, you could cut around a cardboard shape with a pointed
knife.
Place the gingerbread men
on greased oven trays. Put sultanas or currants on for the eyes. Bake in a
moderate oven for 15 minutes. They do tend to burn very easily so be
careful not to leave them in too long. Allow the shapes to cool before
removing them from the trays. Decorate using coloured sweets and icing/jam
for buttons. Alternatively, you could put on extra sultanas as buttons
before baking.
This recipe makes between
15 and 20 gingerbread men. If you are doing this with a class of children
double the recipe and divide the dough into small balls so that each child
has a piece to work with.
Keep an eye on them as
they might just try to run away!
