Simple Christmas Tree Decorations ( which also make great gifts)

Some of the nicest gifts I ever received from my students when I was teaching were Christmas tree ornaments. Some were bought, some were made, but ten years later I still think of each child when I am decorating my tree. So grandparents or people close to you might also love to receive some beautiful tree decorations from your child.

Here is one very simple idea.

You need:

  • Jar lids

  • Photos of your child/children

  • Gold or silver paint

  • Christmas ribbon

  • Glue

  • Glitter/Decorative pens

  1. Cut out a photo so that it fits inside the lid. Put the photo aside for later.
  2. Paint the lid.
  3. Glue ribbon around the outside rim of the lid, making sure you leave extra to make a loop at the top for hanging the decoration on the tree.
  4. Glue the photo inside the lid.
  5. On the back of the lid use glitter pen to write your message eg. Love from James, Christmas 2000.

Over the years you could continue to play with this idea and the lucky recipient will have a wonderful tree full of memories. Of course you can do this for your own tree as well. The children will love to hang up all the previous decorations each year and will look forward to adding new ones, building another lovely family tradition.

A variation to this could be to use a coloured card frame cut out in a special shape, like a heart or a star. Cut your photo out so that it fits inside the frame. Glue the frame on to the photo and write your message around the outside of the frame. Cut out another piece of card as a backing and glue this on. Attach a ribbon at the top for hanging.

Use your imagination to come up with some more ideas.
